Welcome to the Room 9 Website!

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Friends and Students,

Welcome to the Room 9 webpage.  During the year we will use this page to keep you up to date with what's going on in our classroom, publish student's work and give you some helpful weblinks so that you can support your child's learning at home.

Here is a rundown of the topics we will be covering in the first term:

Our schoolwide integrated theme is Maori Culture and the Treaty of Waitangi (Social Studies).  We will be learning about life in NZ prior to 1847.  We have started learning simple phrases in Maori and we will also be learning some waiata.

Maths:

We have started with statistics and we are learning to collect and present data, make graphs, answer questions and make inferences about what we have learned.  We will move on to reflection, rotation and sliding (Geometry) and finish the term with the Number strand (number knowledge and addition/subtraction).

Health and Physical Education:

We are maximising our use of the school pool and we will have swimming every day. Our aquatics and water safety programme are an important aspect of our classroom programme and I would ask that all students bring their togs every day unless they have a note from home.  Goggles and caps are also helpful because they help with vision and keeping the school pool clean.  We will keep you posted on the date for the school swimming sports.

Literacy:

Our reading and writing programme in Term 1 will link to our integrated topic and we will be reading myths, legends and journal stories to support our social studies unit.  Our writing will start with basic skills such as writing sentences correctly and making sure that our writing looks and sounds right i.e. has the correct spelling, punctuation and makes sense.

Homework:

Homework will normally go home on Monday and get marked on Friday.  Students will have spelling words which will be taken from their own writing or chosen from topic lists or the dictionary.  Students are expected to read for a minimum of 20 minutes a night and keep a reading log.  There will be a Basic Facts Maths sheet and activities on Mathletics which relate to our current Maths topic. If you require extra work for your child, I am happy to make suggestions about educational websites you can visit or resources which are readily available.

I look forward to meeting you all in the next few weeks. We are planning interviews early in the term to discuss our programme and set learning goals for the students.

Kind Regards,

Natalie Hill
