Room 10 Newsletter
Dear Parents / Caregivers,
Welcome back to our third term of the year. The integrated theme for Term 3 is the Science strand of 'Making Better Sense of the Material World', where we will be exploring physical and chemical changes of substances. We are also endeavouring to create our class recipe book with cooking every second Friday. A simple programme is attached and it would be appreciated it basic foods could be supplied. This will be requested by a note home prior to the cooking time. This learning is connected to many facets of our classroom learning – Healthy Eating – nutritional choices, Science – substance changes, Mathematics and finally Written Language. An outline for our learning in Term 3:
Numeracy
- Consolidation of all computation strategies, with the focus on fractions, decimals, and percentages.
Topic Mathematics
Written Language
- Consolidation of paragraphing and sentence structures and vocabulary development.
Reading
- The continuation of learning through, applying the comprehension strategies of evaluation (understanding and discussing information read and known); and reaction (expressing an opinion based on formation given in the text), and exploring techniques of using information to support and idea or opinion.
P/E
- Large ball skills and training for School Cross Country.
Art
- The Great Artist – Toulouse-Lautrec's painting technique; and learning to draw a body form to depict a variety shapes / movements within proportions.
Homework
- Return to the weekly basis; with the change of Homework Research presentation time which is now to be during our class library time on a Wednesday afternoon. More time for researching and presenting over the weekend has been requested by both parents and students.
- Homework books will now have a numeracy and writing task sheet included for the students to consolidate the writing skills learnt.
- SPELLING – 10 words, made from the combination of errors made in written work, and student independent selection of unknown words from a photocopied spelling list (from the Spell-rite book). Please check and help yourselves to other words from the list; there is no restriction to learning new words.
- DICTIONARY SKILLS – 10 selected words, requiring a brief meaning so that the student understands and is able to share within class discussion and drama sessions on Friday. (learning to spell these words is optional parent/student choice).
- TIMETABLES – for some students will continue for consolidation – to be learnt for speed and instant recall. The ease of this knowledge supports all areas of Maths/Numeracy, and reflects in the student's mathematical confidence and ability.
- READING – 30 minutes. Students are expected to read nightly, this is supported by weekly class visits to the school library on Wednesdays and a selection of School Journals/ Connected books for independent choice in the Homework Reading Box.
- NUMBER KNOWLEDGE WORK SHEET
- WRITING TASK SHEET
- RESEARCH – is an optional homework activity as explained on the attached sheet with the list of weekly topics for Term 3. Remember presentation time is now on a Wednesday afternoon during Class Library Time.
I conclude with a thank you to all parents for your support in you child's learning.
With regards
Maree Kearney
